East Side Tae Kwon Do competed in our first cross-boarder tournament this weekend at the LMA Open in Renton, Washington, just south of Seattle. Congratulations to our competitors Maxine and Tate – both walked away with gold medals! Maxine and Tate represented Canada in two girls’ sparring categories: 14/15 yrs blue belt competition, and 12/13 yrs red belt competition. We were impressed with the well run and organized tournament that saw competitors from BC, Washington state, Montana, California, and more.
At the tournament all of us, including Master Ellis, were surprised to learn that head shots were allowed in the colour belt matches for young competitors. Compared to a single-point turning kick shot to the chest targets, head shots were valued at 3 points, so if the girls agreed, their heads would certainly become targets. Both of our athletes had the opportunity to decline head shots prior to their matches but they took the tournament rules in stride and agreed to the additional target.
Tate and Maxine both had their work cut out for them but they fought strong during their matches and came out on top. Congratulations to both girls on their first international tournament and matching gold medals!
